Intervju - Cesair (Holandija)

Cesair

[Scroll down for English]
Cesair, vodi nas kroz istoriju preko Tigra i Eufrata pa sve do Irske na mnogim jezicima. To čine na brojnim nastupima u  Zapadnoj Evropi promovišući svoj novi album "Dies, Nox et Omnia". Bend čine: Monique van Deursen - vokal, bodhran, Sophie Zaaijer - violina, viola, čelo, vokal, Fleke van der Hurk - hurdi-gurdi, Thomas Biesmeijer - gitara, celtic buzuki i Jan de Vries - bubnjevi, perkusije.

4. Folk scena Holandije i Belgije je izuzetno jaka. Šta nam možeš reći o folk sceni Istočne Evrope i Balkana?

Cesair leads us through a history of over Tigris and Euphrates, all the way to Ireland in many languages. To make the numerous appearances in Western Europe promoting his new album "Dies, Nox et Omnia". The band consists of: Monique van Deursen -  vocals, bodhrán, zills, Sophie Zaaijer - violin, viola, cello, backing vocals, Fieke van den Hurk - accordion, hurdy-gurdy, hammered dulcimer, Thomas Biesmeijer - guitar, bouzouki, frame-drum, backing vocals and Jan de Vries - drums, percussion. Saved largely new songs and working on a new album, which is in our interview for our Celtic - Slavic Webzine Serbia, Thomas Biesmeijer confirmed.

1. Why the name Cesair? When and how did you come by this idea?

Thomas: Monique and Sophie have both studied Celtic languages and culture, which was where they became familiar with the story of Cesair. She is a mythological princess, who according to legend was the granddaughter of Noah. She travelled across the Mediterranean over 5,000 years ago, in flight of a Deluge, brought forth by a vengeful god. This journey took her from the lands between the Euphrat and the Tigris, past Egypt, Italy and Spain, all the way up to Ireland, where her people became the first human settlers. This myth is a story of a strong, charismatic female leader, who as a figure is a great inspiration for our songs, which are often sung from a woman's point of view. Her story allows us to draw from traditions, cultures, languages and histories from all over the Occident and Oriënt, which helps us to create the diversity that our songs are known for.

2. You define your music as epic folk and mythic music. What is the impact of that?

Thomas: We struggled for some time with the issue of how to define our music. The genre that best approaches a description of our music is Pagan Folk, a term coined by FAUN and Omnia. However, our music is not necessarily pagan in the sense that we do not adhere to some kind of spiritual belief with our music. Rather, we reinvigorate old tales, myths and legends, which is why we defined our own genre.

3.Yours first album Dies, Nox et Omnia was well received by the audience. Songs on this album have made to travel through time, from ancient Babylon to the present day. Are you working on a new album and when can we expect?

Thomas: We are definitely working on new material, however, we believe that our music should grow organically. That is why we haven't set any date for a new album whatsoever. But, consider “Dies, Nox et Omnia” to be the start of an exiting journey : )

4. Folk scene of the Netherlands and Belgium is very strong. What can you tell us about the folk scene in Eastern Europe? How can she look?

Thomas: Some Eastern-European folk bands have made name over here in the Benelux and Germany, including Eriney and Irfan from Bulgaria, The Moon and the Nightspirit from Hungary and Dakhabrakha from Ukraine. We love these bands and many of their songs are inspirational to us. So, we have proof that there is a very strong base for folk music in eastern European countries. This is probably because of the rich history and many different cultures and traditions that permeate the area!

5. They performed at many festivals in Western Europe (Castlefest, Keltfest, etc..). Next year's guests in Belgium on a big festival Trolls and Legendes, along with bands Rastaban, Cuelebre and Corvus Corax. What are your impressions? Are these festivals helped to affirm as a band and that has helped in the spread of folk musicamong listeners?

Thomas: It is an absolute privilege to be able to perform at such a renowned festival as Trolls et Légendes, amongst fantastic bands and great friends. We have performed with Rastaban and Corvus Corax many times before and we are glad that we are now able to introduce Cesair to foreign audiences, as we believe that there are many folk/Mittelalter/alternative enthusiasts and music-lovers in general who would enjoy our music. The notion that folk-festivals can be organised on such a big scale here in western Europe shows how a “niche” musical genre like folk music is able to reach and intrigue a truly vast group of people.

6. Yours album can be purchased at yours concerts and where more?

Thomas: It is available on all our concerts, and it can be ordered via our website, http://www.cesair.nl/.

7. What are the band's plans for the future?

Thomas: We will continue playing live and writing new songs, and we have many great plans and goals that we want to achieve! Expect to see much more of us in the following years!

8. And in the end what will you told readers in Serbia?

Thomas: We'd like to say hi and welcome to everyone who is finding us for the first time, and we'd like to thank everyone who already supports us! We would love to come and perform in Serbia, so please help and share Cesair name in whichever way possible ;)
