Eriney
[Scroll down for English]
Bend čine Viktorija Nikolova - vokal, Aleksandra Škodrova - vokal, Zdravko Peev - ud, tambura, Nikola Petrov - celtic buzuki, Aleksandar Tupankov - perkusije i Ivan Ivanov - korneto, flauta.
5. Šta za vas predstavlja muzika koju pravite?
Nikola: Sve naše pesme predstavljaju duhovne puteve.
Balkan folk scene has to hope and something to strive. This is confirmed by the young and energetic band Eriney from Sofia, Bulgaria. Create original music inspired by the Balkan, Oriental folklore, tradition and history of Bulgaria, as well as medieval music in Western Europe. The band consists of Victoria Nikolova - vocals, Alexander Shkodrova - vocals, Zdravko Peev - ud, tambura, Nikola Petrov - celtic bouzouki, Alexander Tupankov - percussion and Ivan Ivanov - cornetto, whistles. Currently preparing his first album and tour in festivals in the Balkans and throughout Europe, allowing us to interview for our Celtic - Slavic Webzine Serbia and confirms member of the band Nikola Petrov.
Nikola: The band started as a three-men instrumental project by the name Sur (old Bulgarian for grey color or gray-furred animal). When our first singer Dentisa Seraphim joined in we decided it was time for change. She came up with the word Eriney, instead of chosing somethin already existing. We really liked it, because it sounded magical and a bit mysterious. We now have the luxury to give it our own meaning, and make it represent us, instead of bearing the preconceptions of already existing things.
2. Your musical genre defining as Balkan-Neofolk. how did it come about? What made it?
Nikola: Words and labels don't concern us too much, but we do realise they are sometimes helpful. We play our original music, we play medieval music and we play folk songs - all in our own way. Terms like Pagan Folk describe somewhat what we do, but they also put accent on religion and spirituality, witch is not necceserily our goal. We play old music in a new way, heavily influenced by our rich cultural heritage, hence the term Balkan Neofolk.
3. Folk and neofolk scene Bulgaria is quite good quality, you will agree. There is Irfan, Isihia etc.. Balkan has a strong folk scene. There are a lot of young folk bands, that their culture and traditions expressed through music. How do you it seems?
Nikola: Thanks! Isihia and Irfan are most cerainly world-class musicians that are both a huge influence and dear friends. As for the young bands - sadly they are not as much as I wish, but we are getting there. Oratnitza and Der Dudelgeist are folk bands that are definetely worth your time! Let's hope that more and more young people will join our ever-growing family!
4. Eriney has already released several tracks, that the audience is well accepted. As work progresses on the new album? Can you tell us something about?
Nikola: We write new music all the time and we have enough material for almost 2 albums by now! However, the past years has been shaky, as we had to change our line-up several times. In fact, we have a brand new musician on board, who joined last week! Our line-up is now more solid than ever and we are starting back the recording process. If all goes well you'll be able to hear our first cd by the end of the year!
5. What to represent music that you create?
Nikola: All of our songs are spiritual journeys of sorts. We are combining elements from Bulgarian, Balkan, Oriental, Western European and Scandinavian music, and we sing on many languages. Our message is simple - we believe that music is the way to show how similar all people are and how superficial our differences are. The Balkans are place rich of colors, cultures and sounds. We just take what we can and give it back to the audiance.
6. What are the band's plans for the future? Perhaps a tour abroad? Serbia?
Nikola: We are playing some very interesting festivals in our country this year and we are definetely looking for opportunities to go abroad as much as we can! Show in Serbia was actually schaduled, but unfortunantely the flood disaster struck and the festival was cancelled. It is only a matter of time before we come to Serbia, though, so expect us soon!
7. In the end, what would you say to the audience in Serbia?
Nikola: You guys are the best! We have many many friends in Serbia and we can't wait to meet them all. Last time mother Nature stood in our way, but next time this wouldn't stop us. See you soon!
